What is Engage Sochi?
Sochi, Russia — site of the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The former Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow, but this will be the first time the Russian Federation will host the Olympic Games. We believe this event will bring unprecedented opportunities to share the Gospel — not just with the nations of the world as they gather together for sport, but to plant a firm Gospel root within the Olympic city and surrounding areas.
Traditionally, Evangelical Christians have looked at the Olympic Games as an opportunity for large-scale evangelism with people from around the world. And, while this is true, most groups involved with Olympic ministry have traditionally looked past the opportunity the Olympic Games bring for establishing long-range church planting and/or reproducible ministries. Therefore, the Engage Sochi initiative overlays traditional church planting models with a mass evangelism component in order to cover not just broad seed sowing, but long-term relationship-based discipleship as well.
Engage Sochi 2014 is a Ministry of the International Missions Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. This is not the official website, this is a website created to inform and update supporters of David Erdmann, as he prepares to serve with this Ministry at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
The official site for Engage Sochi 2014 is www.engagesochi.org. At the official site you will find all the information about this Ministry as well as guidance if you feel lead to participate.
